Preventing Tank Corrosion Is Easier Than You Might Think

If you are a fuel marketer who dispenses diesel, odds are that your business has experienced some type of disruption caused by corrosion within the fuel system over the past several years. These common marketer pain-points may be all too familiar to you:

  • Degrading fuel quality
  • Compliance testing difficulties
  • Equipment failures
  • Higher maintenance costs

What’s causing this corrosion? The introduction of cleaner-burning Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and the increased use of biodiesel in diesel fuels has created an atmosphere for greater microbial activity in tanks. When water enters that atmosphere through a fuel drop or from ground/surface intrusion, you have an environment that is ripe for accelerated corrosion. Numerous studies have indicated that even a small amount of water at the bottom of a tank can ultimately lead to corrosion and debris throughout your fuel system.

HOW ARE MARKETERS BEING PROACTIVE AGAINST CORROSION?

In lieu of reactive corrosion treatments like biocide applications or frequent tank cleanings, many marketers are now taking proactive measures to stop corrosion from forming in the first place. Marketers are attacking the issue at its source and removing water from the bottom of their diesel tanks to avoid costly fuel quality issues, testing problems, and equipment failures caused by corrosion. Being proactive allows marketers to escape costly reactive treatments that inflate maintenance budgets.

Many top marketers are retrofitting their existing tanks with the Corrosion Control™ Water Separator to proactively remove water from their diesel tanks. The Water Separator removes any water/acid mixture off the bottom of the tank and separates it from the clean fuel. The water/acid mixture is collected in a vessel for disposal while the clean fuel is directed back to the tank, effectively removing water from the system before it can cause corrosion.

Operation of the Water Separator is completely automated by an EVO™ Series Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG). The EVO™ Series ATG runs the Water Separator for 45 minutes after each delivery (a key source of water entry) as well as once-a-day during a non-peak time to account for any ground/surface water that may have entered the system. This proactive corrosion prevention gives marketers a one-time expense with a rapid ROI compared to prolonged corrosion treatments that only address corrosion once it’s already begun to form.

WHY CHOOSE THE CORROSION CONTROL™ WATER SEPARATOR?

Marketers have chosen the Corrosion Control Water Separator as the best-in-class solution for tank water removal for the following reasons:

Small Footprint

The compact design requires only an area 11 inches in diameter inside a tank sump. In a tight tank sump where space is at a premium, the Water Separator’s small footprint makes it easy to retrofit existing tanks.

Easy To Order

The Water Separator can service any tank up to 10 feet in diameter. There are no tank measurement surveys or configurations to complete. Just a single part number for all applications.

No Filters

The element-free vessel has no filters to change, meaning no ongoing replacement filter costs.

Low Maintenance

The separated water level is monitored by an integrated probe that delivers automated notification of a full vessel via the EVO™ Series ATG. Once full, a technician uses a simple hand pump to remove the water. The ¾ gallon capacity vessel is emptied on-average only 2-3 times per year.

Easy Installation

The Water Separator requires a single 4 inch tank bung adjacent to any FE PETRO 4” submersible pump. It uses the flow of fuel created by the pump to generate a vacuum which suctions the tank bottom through a single water pickup tube. The pickup tube is easily installed through the bung and rests on the tank bottom directly below.

Easy Setup

Control and monitoring of the Water Separator is provided via an EVO™ 600/6000 ATG with an included Corrosion Control™ application. The EVO™ 600/6000 automates the separator run times, monitors separated water levels, and provides notification when the vessel is ready to be emptied. No additional control devices are required to be purchased or installed.

Easy Retrofit

Existing EVO™ 550/5000 ATGs can be retrofitted with an easy EVO™ 600/6000 Upgrade Kit to gain all Corrosion Control™ System functionality. The Multiplexing Sensor Hub can be used to add low voltage sensor inputs for the Water Separator without having to break concrete to run new conduit.

HOW TO GET THE WATER SEPARATOR
